Well, it's the twelfth and I've already finished my second book of the new year. That's a lot better than I was doing last year. I'm sort of surprising myself though, with the type of books I've been reading. I love romance novels, but with all of the choices I had to choose from for starting out a new reading year, romance wasn't really one of them. It just sort of happened this way I guess. I can't believe I've already read two, by the same author - in a series. (Margaret Mallory's The Return of the Highlanders Series.) Normally I like to take my time while reading a series because I don't usually like too much of the same characters one book after another, I tend to get a little tired of them and like to take a break. But not this time. To be honest, the reads could have been a little better, but while actually reading them, I couldn't get enough of them! So there I went, one book right after the other, and I am actually pretty anxious to get to the next book, but it isn't due out until November of this year, so I will just have to wait.

But those first two weren't the only romances I was itching to read. I had one on hold (His Mistress by Christmas) from the library since December, but I didn't get it until last week, and the other (The Beautiful Stranger) I decided to get right after I finished The Sinner last night on my Nook. I decided to go with an author I knew I would enjoy: Julia London. Also, it's part of a series that I should have finished already. So once I finish those two books, that will be four romance novels in one month. I've never done that before. I always try to space certain reads out, as I stated earlier in this post.

How about you all, have you ever gotten on a reading roll of sorts? With a certain series, or maybe a particular genre?

Short Monday: Jane Austen's Nightmare.

Short Monday #8: Jane Austen's Nightmare, by Syrie James. Part of Jane Austen Made Me Do It.

To Miss Jane Austen's horrific surprise, she has a nightmare in which her characters tell her they are unhappy with the way she has written them, except for four of them, that is.

I sort of wish I had waited to get this book from the library until after I had read the rest of her novels. But even though I didn't know all of the characters in this first story and didn't feel familiar enough to know what they were speaking about, there was enough of a background to keep this a short story, and not feel completely lost in it. This was an okay story. Though, at first, it seemed as though Ms. James was criticizing the characters Jane Austen had created. It turned out to be harmless enough in that light, as I got further into this short story. I began to wonder what they would say to her next and who she would meet. I also wondered more about the characters I haven't "met" yet, I am a little more anxious to get to their books and get to know them.
The story comes to a shocking climax and just as things look really bad for Miss Austen, it is over just like that. She wakes from her nightmare and confides in her sister Cassandra the horrible things she dreamt. Goodness, can you imagine? To be an author and have your beloved characters (and some not so beloved characters) come to you in a dream and say that they are upset with you for the choices you made for them? I used to write a little bit and I know that would simply horrify me.
Not a bad start for this book, but I still wish I had read her novels previously.

There's going to be a few set-up pages for some personal reading challenges, and also a new feature that I will have on my blog (A romance week once a month since I am such a romance junkie - I almost opened a new blog for it, but decided that would be too much extra work, and I've gotten some bad (lazy) blogging habits of late, so that wouldn't be a very good idea for me.) that will hopefully be starting in February.

I got cash for Christmas, and with it I bought movies and books I've been wanting. I was going to take a picture of my loot, but was at first too lazy, then thought what the heck, and then I found out my camera needs batteries and I have no extras. Wrapping It All Up: Jane Austen Month.

Well, my Jane Austen month was pretty much a bust, lol. But I should have spent more time on it. Maybe next year I'll have another one, and I'll have a better starting point. :) I hope you all at least liked Mr. Darcy Week. That was fun to explore his character a little bit more like that.
I wish I could have gotten to posting my (four, soon to be five) reviews, but the holidays were just too distracting. But that wasn't the whole point in me having this Jane Austen month. My real goal was to see if my fandom for her could grow, and I am so happy to say that it did indeed. I also really discovered just how much I really like Mr. Darcy and Lizzy Bennet. I am anxious to discover and get to know more of her characters, I even bought this book which I can hardly wait to dive in to. I have four books here staring at me, waiting to be finished, and started. Plus three more coming from the library - & I am quite excited about them. So there is probably going to be a lot more Jane Austen talk next month as well. But of course, I will try to put a break in between all the Jane-related reviews.
So, thanks for following my Jane Austen month, what there was of it, anyway!

I love my Nook Color, but in the beginning I found myself using it mostly for surfing the web, and unfortunately that hasn't changed much. Mr. Darcy Week, day seven: A Letter to Mr. Darcy.

Dear Mr. Darcy,

I first really got to know you in a film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I became rather fond of you in that first viewing. I then got to know more of you from the book. Unfortunately I was not fond of the book much at all. I was a little disappointed, to be honest. But it did not lessen my liking for you at all, only the author's writing. For a long time I ignored, or avoided her books, until recently. When I decided to give Jane Austen another chance, I came across a mountain of Mr. Darcy books, all about you, and you know, I was rather...amused and surprised at just how many there are out there. On my venture to learn more about Austen's appeal to so many people, I thought it might be a little fun, and helpful, to read some character & story continuations of her work. (It has been very helpful.) While I'm sure her other works are appreciated, I have realized that your story is indeed the most popular. & I can see exactly why, well, mostly.
From the continuing books I have read related to you, half of those authors have stated their characters in basically saying that you are a most ideal, desirable man. I cannot help but agree to that in general. I say in general because you are the most popular amongst her male characters. The books are out there to prove it. Right now, for me, you are the one I like best because yours is the only story of hers I have read. I hate to say my opinion might change in the future, but of course it could. I adore finding new literary heroes to love and villains to love/hate alike. But as Pride and Prejudice being the first one of Austen's to have read, you will always be at least near the top amongst her characters. And certainly right now you are very near the top, with many other literary heroes I have come to know and love.

I wish I could express myself more clearly, but my problem is that, I've simply read too many versions of you recently. I think I should probably go back and re-read Pride and Prejudice before I write any more to you, it was quite a while back since I did read it. But I will clearly say this, from the movie point-of-view that is, I found you rather handsome, a little confusing in your demeanor, but in the end, quite commendable and romantic. I am glad to have met such a character as yourself.

Mr. Darcy Week (6)

Mr. Darcy Week, day six: If Mr. Darcy were Supernatural...

Right now I am reading Amanda Grange's Mr. Darcy, Vampyre - I'm only seventeen pages in, and he hasn't revealed his secret yet to Lizzy, but still, it got me thinking: What kind of a supernatural creature would Mr. Darcy be, and would he be a good one, or a bad one? A bit hard for me to say, but after some thought, I think he'd be a Werewolf. Not just because I prefer them to Vampires and other creatures, but I've never heard (read) of a Vampire quite like Mr. Darcy. I think his personality is closer to that of a Werewolf's. Those that I've come across in literature-land are usually on the brooding side of things, serious and seeming to carry the world on their shoulders in some way or another. That, I think, is definitely closer to Mr. Darcy. As for good or bad, I of course choose good, he is a gentleman after all. I think he'd be fiercely protective though, territorial even.
I don't think he'd make a very good Vampire. (But who knows, by the end of the above stated book, I might be swayed, a little.) I hate to think of him as a cold, unfeeling, able-to-turn-off-his-humanity; Vampire. Not to mention actually being dead, yet alive via drinking human blood. (Really, is it truly a pleasant thought picturing Mr. Darcy as totally blood thirsty - at least in the beginning? Not for me, it isn't.) Especially after giving the worst proposal ever, and then doing everything he could to make things right, just for Elizabeth, the woman he loved. I like to think those are closer to Werewolf traits, than Vampire traits. Of course I know there are some exceptions to Vampires, such as Stefan Salvatore, and...hmm. He's the only one that comes to mind right now. Anyhoo, that's basically my take on Mr. Darcy as a supernatural being. How about you all? Any takes on Mr. Darcy as a supernatural, or, any other classic fiction character for that matter?

Mr. Darcy Week, day five: Other Mr. Darcy's.

You know, I was going to post some pictures of other Mr. Darcy's (other than Matthew Macfadyen), but while doing my search, I came across this rather intriguing picture of Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. I have to admit, after staring at this picture for a good five minutes, contemplating what his look could be saying, I don't care to post any other Mr. Darcy's. As I'm rather anxious now to be able to buy the version with Colin Firth after Christmas. & Possibly watch it, over and over again. Just by this picture alone I think I can understand the appeal the BBC version has, within (almost) all the Darcy novels I've read so far, that mention it. Oh, enough of all that though, here is the photo:

There is just something about it that makes me want to let out a Regency type giggle I'm always reading about. One worthy of being done behind a beautiful fan, no doubt.

Mr. Darcy Week, day three: My Favorite Scene from the (2005) Movie.

I wish I could have found a better picture, this one will have to do for now. It is the scene where Mr. Darcy confesses his love for Lizzy, and then she turns him down. I think it's really a turning point in the plot, and for both of them as well. (Watch the clip on Youtube.)

Mr. Darcy Week, day two: My Favorite Mr. Darcy Novel.

If you haven't looked them up before, as I hadn't when I first started searching for Jane Austen character related fiction, you may not believe just how many Mr. Darcy novels there are out there. There are dozens upon dozens of them. Obviously, he has made quite an impact on many female readers and authors out there to have so many to choose from. I am pleased to say I managed to find a couple of decent ones (and some not so decent ones) that I rather liked (and disliked). But I digress, my favorite one, so far, is Amanda Grange's Mr. Darcy's Diary.
I don't want to say too much about it before I've gotten a chance to review it, but so far it is the only one that seemed original enough to stand on it's own two book feet. Even though I had read it right after another Darcy's-viewpoint story, it was a refreshing take on Pride and Prejudice. Offering a pleasing viewpoint from Mr. Darcy's take on things. So if you're looking for a good place to start in this area of Austen-related fiction, you might want to consider starting with this read.

Mr. Darcy Week (1)

Well, my review week was a bust, but it's not too late for Mr. Darcy Week. :) (Which was actually supposed to start yesterday.) Anyhoo, here is day one: My Favorite Mr. Darcy.

To be honest, I have seen only one other movie adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, which was the 1940's version with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. I didn't really care much for that one. When I saw the 2005 version, I was very much hooked to that movie. It is definitely one of my favorites. I love the way it was filmed, and obviously, I loved Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy. I really loved that version of the character. I was sort of impressed when I found he had never even read Pride and Prejudice before playing Mr. Darcy, and only basing his character off of the script, I thought that was pretty good. Because it was almost exactly how I pictured Mr. Darcy. It was a good difference, because he seemed more like a real and more likable person than book Darcy. For me, anyway.
I do plan to watch the BBC version with Colin Firth (one of my favorite actors) - it seems like every other Darcy book I've read refers to that adaptation, so of course it has become a must-see for me. So who knows, my favorite Mr. Darcy might change. But right now, it is definitely from the 2005 Pride and Prejudice; Matthew Macfadyen.

Understanding Jane Austen.

Well, it's December already - and to be honest, I am so behind. Sorry this took so long everyone, but: WELCOME TO JANE AUSTEN MONTH! :)

I was a little worried about this when I first decided I was going to do it. I was going to read Jane Austen's work and other author's Jane-related work if it killed me. & It sort of has - in a good way. I can't say exactly that I understand her work any better, because to be honest, I haven't gotten to any more of her books yet. I did read Pride and Prejudice a while back though, after seeing the movie I just had to read that book. I don't really know what happened, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, as much as I hoped I would. Since then I hadn't been tempted to pick up another Jane Austen book again.
Until, they showed my favorite movie version of it on television. (With Keira Knightley.) So I decided to give it all another chance, instead of ignoring her books in the library and bookstores, and titles from other authors that adored her so much they were enthralled to write their own Austen inspired stories. So there I was last month, checking out books from the library trying to get a head start (it didn't help, my reading habits of late are horrifying), and, even buying the lovely Barnes and Noble leatherbound edition of Jane Austen's complete works. (A happy purchase.) Sadly though, for me and my said reading habits, I only managed to make it through two of those non-Jane written books. Not that I hated them, I really liked them. I think the Darcy factor had something to do with it. Even though he is the only Jane hero I know, I think he will always be my favorite. He and Lizzy Bennet have always outshone Lady Chatterly and Oliver Mellors, even Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester; as a favorite literary couple. And I am not alone in that, after seeing how many "Mr. Darcy" books there are out there I feel sort of safe saying he could easily rank number one if a poll were ever taken. But of course, to each their own.
I think I already do understand what has made her work so appreciated for so long, and much longer to come. It's still a little hard for me to explain right now, but there definitely is a Darcy factor in there somewhere, for my appreciations of it all. Maybe I just needed the right story on the right day...

My Review:
I would have given this book five stars, except that the Earl's disfigurement was really disappointing. And if you know how big of a phantom of the opera fan I am, then you know that that's really something. LOL.
Disappointing hideous face aside, the Earl was quite likable. In fact, all of the characters were so perfectly likable or loatheable that I think I may have found a new favorite historical-romance author. I can hardly wait to find time to get to the next book in this trilogy. I actually have many of her books on my to-read list, but this was the first one I actually picked up. I am so glad it did not disappoint.
Also earning this only four stars, the romance was really a little flat for me. I didn't find it as exciting as the mystery that Camille and Brian (the Earl) were trying to solve. I think it moved rather too quickly, and I thought Camille was being a bit reckless in doing so, so soon. I only remember them having one serious talk together and then the next "night-meeting" they had, they were together. I would have liked to see their relationship develop a bit more and see more of an attraction between them.
I wasn't expecting all of the mystery in this book, I loved it. It was chilling and not overdone, and as usual is the case with me for killers, I was shocked to find out who it was. To be honest, I never really try to figure it out, to make the moment it is revealed that much better for myself. I do think the author did a good job with presenting so many suspects to choose from. I think that even if I were really trying to figure it out, I still wouldn't have put my finger on the right person.
Overall this was a pleasing first read by possibly a new favorite author.

Dance Lessons.

My Review:
(Thrilling synopsis eh?)
I actually rated this book by how much this story haunted me after I had finished reading it. It just wouldn't leave me alone. And even now, sitting down to review it after having read it weeks ago, I'm still feeling the same weary and appalling way I did right after I had finished it.
I say that because, even though this came out to be a very horrifyingly sad and emotional read, I hated all of the characters in it. If they were real people, I would never want to know any of them. Not even before all of the bitterness and sadness had come about in their lives. I don't even really know where to begin breaking down this read. The actions of some of the characters was truly vengeful, ugly, and devastating.
I guess first I will start with how this was written and formatted. I really liked how the three main women in this had their own sections and how when needed it seemed like it was easily sewn together when their stories joined. It was a pleasantness while reading it, knowing that an event that happened in the past was going to be explained soon made this book easier to take, not having to wait and wait for the story to unfold the way it did.
In the prologue, the reader is introduced to Ellen and Fintan, a happy young couple, before heading into the first chapter, where you find that their marriage is slowly falling apart, which leads up to a horrible tragedy and Ellen finds herself on her to way Ireland to meet her mother-in-law, for the first time. What Ellen finds out while there is truly heart-breaking and she won't, or can't, move on until she pieces together Fintan's devastating past.
Even though this was so haunting, I found myself not being able to put it down, and spending those extra half hours a night in bed reading this book. I had to know what happened and what caused Fintan to be the way he was towards his mother. And what caused Fintan's mother, Jo, to become the sad woman that she was. The explanation, as I've already said, was haunting and the results of those actions truly sad.
The ending however, I found to be a little flat. Otherwise I might have given this five stars. But there was one thing that came about in the ending that I had been wondering about since I first read about that character. I wondered where she was after all of that happened, and I got my answer then at the end of the book, which was actually a little gratifying getting that one last extra piece of the puzzle.
This was such an engrossing read, I don't think I'll forget it for a long time.

My Review:
I had high hopes for this book, I really wanted to be able to say that I absolutely loved this book, but I just can't. While I was able to finish it quickly and get involved with the characters and even be transported to Ireland with Kate and all of the lovely lace makers, it just felt like there was something missing. I really liked the characters and the author's style of writing, but I just couldn't really bring myself to believe that she would be taken in so quickly by (most of) the locals. I also didn't feel like she (Kate) truly confronted everything she needed to come to terms with in her life to be able to go on as she did.
While allowed a glimpse into the lives of the villagers and even growing fond of a few of them, that's all it felt like for me, a glimpse. I wished I could get to know them more and in a way spend more time with each of them and Kate as well, to be able to really feel like this story came full circle. I would have loved to see more of small town life in Ireland, and more of Kate learning how to make the lace. I think she learned it rather quickly, comparing to how the other women of the lace making society spent most of their lives & childhoods at making it.
I haven't really much else to say, though this book was not a total disappointment. This story showed a lot of potential and I will be waiting to see what this author comes up with next.

My Review:

I don't remember what made me want to read this book, but I'm glad I finally got to it. While I think the pace of the story could have picked up a little more, I really liked the author's easy writing style. Not to say though, that the writing was enough, because it wasn't. What really held me more than the writing and the honestly written characters, was the whole "Finola O'Flynn" situation. Much like Sophie, I began to wonder about Finola and what was so darn special about the woman that seemed to have captivated everyone in the small town of Booley.

But something I found rather strange and even a little disheartening about Sophie, was that she eventually seemed to really want to become Finola. That bothered me, because it made it seem like the message was that it wasn't ok to be yourself, but ultimately, in Sophie's path to "becoming Finola" she really became herself. She became Sophie. I don't think she would have been able to achieve that if the real Finola hadn't shown up again. I was glad for that, because before that, and I hate to repeat myself in a way here, I think Sophie was a little lost on the path to self discovery and healing. And putting a little too much faith in the real Finola, whom she had never even met. I almost hate to admit, that I rather liked the Finola in Sophie's head more than the real one. Mostly because I had become as fond of that Finola as Sophie had, and the real one, wasn't much of a thrill to know.

I began to wonder when or if the real Finola would really show up again, because it was getting near the end when she finally did. I think it came about a little flat actually. But then, I'm not really sure what I was expecting or hoping for when there would finally be a meeting. But, I think I was actually sweating more than Sophie was when it finally happened, why I'm not quite sure, but I think it was mostly because, like Sophie, I'd never known the real Finola O'Flynn, so I didn't know what her reaction would be to find Sophie in her shop, claiming to be her.

I don't want to spoil it or take away more mystery from the story, so I will end this review here by saying while this wasn't quite what I expected, I really liked reading it and getting to know these characters.

Hey Everyone! Well, while I planned to make up the hours I missed by sleeping in, I just have too much to do today, to be able to do so. So I am wrapping it up! While I didn't spend any time with vampires and other supernatural creatures like I wanted to, I still enjoyed the choice of books I did go with. One being a tattered family, and the other a lady scandalized by a rake, with the ton buzzing about it the very next day. (My favorite pass-time.) :p I didn't finish them last night, but I am quite sure I can finish at least one of them tonight.

I am taking a (short) dinner break. I say a short one because I have already taken a long unexpected break from reading, convinced to go to the mall and help pick out a birthday gift. Alas, shopping anywhere is my enemy.
Anyhoozer, considering my reading habits of late, the progress I have made is rather good. I'm about halfway through The Secret, but I think I will move to another book after dinner. And hopefully my distractions will be far less. (i.e.: my dog will be too full to move and/or bark so he'll be sleeping. & Everyone else will be getting tired.) My Review:

This was a fun little read. I loved Emma and all of her friends and family, and I cannot wait to see how things go for Emma and her friends in the next books. I must admit, I had a little trouble getting into it at first, but once I did, I really enjoyed it's light-heartedness on what can sometimes turn out to be a serious and perhaps heavy subject for some. Emma's comical goings-on on her tough road ahead were not very relatable for me since I'm not anywhere near her situation, but I really felt for her and the tough time she began to have with trying to get pregnant. While I wasn't fully relating to her situation, I really did manage to like Emma and everyone in her life, because I felt at one point or another, I had either known, met, or heard about someone like them all. And I think that made it an easier read for me.

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon.

I just signed up for the 24 hour Read-a-Thon. & I can hardly wait to lock myself in my room and just read. But I am not going to start at my 5 AM start time, lol. I've had a tough week and I am sleeping in, then spending the rest of the day with vampires, witches, and werewolves.

I don't have a set reading stack for tomorrow. But I do know that I want to at least start the next Sookie Stackhouse book on my list, and also start the second volume of The Vampire Diaries. I'm almost sure I'll have only one library book left to read, since I'll probably finish The Smoke Thief tonight. (Also a library book.) It feels so good to look at the library stack and see that it is almost non-existent, after being there on my desk staring at me for so long!

My Review:

When I chose to read this book I did not remember that I had tried to read one of this author's books before. I am glad that I did not remember, because if I had, I might not have read this book at all. I actually rather liked this book, but I only gave it two stars because of how much I disliked the lead heroine.
Lorna seemed very unaware of what she was doing, and what might come of her actions. I didn't really understand her character at first, but I had the impression that she was at least moderately intelligent, just stuck in the rut of her life with seemingly no escape. I didn't fully realize that she was possibly socially inept until I got further into the book, where Lorna began to make some bad and frankly, disappointing choices. But I didn't blame Lorna for her lack of social skills. I blamed her aunt, who seemed to have disabled her in a way, needlessly. That really made me feel bad for Lorna, and although that did help me understand her better, it still didn't quite explain her lack of common sense, or more accurately, her lack of choice to use it.
When Lorna arrives at Snow Hall she feels an almost instant connection to the beautiful old house. However, it is rundown and in need of great repair. Without the funds to do this, Lorna's solicitor strongly suggests that she sell it and move on with her life. One of her desires in particular, to open and run her own stationary shop. I began to really worry and yet enjoy the curve balls in the story being thrown by the author at what happens next, when her charming cousin she did not even know existed, shows up at Snow Hall, and invites her to meet even more members of her family. Lorna immediately trusts him and takes his offer, not knowing that it will be one of the most ultimate mistakes that lead her on an unsure path of seemingly ruthless betrayal and self-discovery.
I found myself liking the story itself. I read it quickly, and throughout I felt it had a gothic feel to it. The pace was good, and I actually liked the character development, and the characters in it, good and bad. They all made me feel something, which is always a good sign. Ultimately, I am glad I picked this book up, and I even plan to read another by this author, and re-try the one that turned me away from her initially, now that I see what kind of a story she can write.

My Review:
I would have given this story five stars, but this was a little too dramatic for me at points. If you know me that may be a bit of a shock because I adore dramatic stories. But, as we all know romance already has it's fair amount of assumed cheese in it's pages, but this bordered on just plain unbelievable at times...the odd thing though, this book sat on my shelf for the longest time, I finally picked it up, but I think I picked it up too late. This is one of Julia London's earlier books, I bought it a few years ago actually (that horrifies me to admit that it sat on my shelf for that long, but I digress), I think I should have read it as soon as I bought it. I am positive I would have loved this book then. But since my tastes have changed and I prefer a little less drama than I used to in romances, I didn't enjoy this one as much as I hoped I would, but I did enjoy it.
I picked this one up later the same night as I had finished The Year of Living Scandalously, hoping for a better read from her. I am so glad I did. Even though this one had it's dramatic downfalls and moments of "oh come on! 's" I couldn't wait to see what would befall the brave hero and heroine next. Lilly was so lovable and innocent to Adrian's, and to Benedict's (or, "the rat's") ulterior motives that I could not help but feel sorry for her and to just persevere through what seemed like their pure petty selfishness through a good part of the book. I found myself with mixed feelings towards Adrian though. At the beginning I was horrified for him, but when he took his revenge on his brother and his father, I was rather apalled because of what he was doing to Lilly at the same time. The "what a pig" alarm flashed in my mind quite often at his antics..but this truly would have horrified me if he wouldn't had done everything in his power to redeem himself and make everything right between he and Lilly - which of course, he did do.
When everything began to unfold as Lilly took on the task of unravelling a huge family mess between brothers, father, mothers, and old lovers, I could not help but feel a little shocked and, well, appalled really at some of the actions that took place. But I found myself as glad as everyone in the book was feeling once the truth came out. Also, once I found out the truth, I couldn't help but feel a little bad for Benedict, even though he was a little weasel at times.

My Review:
Normally, I rave about Julia London, but this one, it just didn't really do anything for me. But that doesn't mean that I didn't see the potential for the characters and plot for the next book in this series. This one felt mostly like a "leading up to..." book. And well, honestly, I wasn't all that excited about the hero and heroine (Declan and Keira). It just felt like something was missing. I can't quite put my finger on what though, but I'm leaning towards not enough of a connection between them in the first place. Looking past all of that for a moment, this was a little funny and of course a little charming, otherwise I definitely would have put this down. (Yes, even so it being a Julia London novel. lol.)
I would actually like to see more go on between Declan and Keira, see their relationship grow more, especially since at least half of Keira's problems have gone away, at least for the time being. I also cannot wait to see what happens with Lily. Once she returned, at the end there was a very shocking surprise, and, I want to know as well as all of the characters in the story: what happened all those years ago and find out where those jewels went!
I haven't really much else to say, so I think I will just cut this one short, and hope for the better in book two. (Due out in Feb. 2012, ugh!)

Tempted by the Night.

My Review:
To be honest, if I were to go by the synopsis alone, I would have passed this book by. But I have read the first book, and if I hadn't I wouldn't have gotten to read this lovely love story. I wouldn't have seen another side to Lady Hermione's character, and I would not have learned Lord Rockhurst's extremely surprising secret. The synopsis isn't exactly on the mis-leading side, as it just plainly leaves a few key factors of the story out, which I greatly appreciated, because it made finding out what was in this book that made it so special, and well, surprising - that much more fun.
Elizabeth Boyle is one of my new favorite authors, because a) she can write really lovable and relatable characters, and b) her writing style is just really fun/funny at times.
I could not wait for Lady Hermione to find the ring and see what her wish would be, and once it was granted, I could hardly wait to find out what Lord Rockhurst was really up to, but I was also a little worried for Hermione and what she might find out. I didn't want to end up as horrified as she could have been with the possibilities of what he could have been up to. While she did end up horrified, I was a little...wary. Because that aspect of the story was totally unexpected. Once I got over it though, it was a fun little adventure I could hardly wait to get to the part I really wanted to read; where Lord Rockhurst finds out who his mystery lady was. I was also a little scared of that part though, because what if Hermione's (and okay, mine as well) worst fears were confirmed? I would have been so heartbroken for her, and completely mad at Lord Rockhurst - which I honestly did not want to be since I liked his character so much.
Overall this was as much a fun and entertaining read as the first book in the series was - which I am glad I picked up.

The Exile.

I was really excited when I first found out about this book, because I love Jamie Fraser so much, I thought it would be really interesting to see his side of the story. And that is essentially what this book was supposed to be: Jamie's point of view. But, I don't think it was, really. The story part of this book was on the disappointing side.
Here's why I feel that way: there wasn't much difference at all from what happened in Outlander. (Which does make sense, I realize it is virtually the same story, but there was nothing special about this. Nothing different enough.) In the foreword of sorts; this is described as what happened to Jamie while Claire wasn't there, how he saw Claire, and there was supposed to be a little sub-plot going as well - which there was, barely. I had such high expectations and hopes for this novel because I loved Outlander so much, but it wasn't really what it was supposed to be, in my opinion. I think it could have been so much more. I would have liked to see more of Geilie's story, more of what happened to Jamie before he went back to Scotland, and also more of Murtagh's thoughts as well. and based on the thickness of Outlander, I hoped this would have a little more width to it - even knowing that it wouldn't be covering all of Outlander, just a portion of it, I just really believe there could have been more in this.
This book was not all disappointing though. The artwork was wonderful. It was really great to be able to get a better image of the characters the author created. You can see a sample of it here on the author's website. (and is it just me, or does the man in that second panel look like Sean Bean?)
I don't have much else to say about this book, except that if you're willing to ignore the story and just admire the artwork and enjoy seeing the characters and some interesting scenes from Outlander come to life in a way, then this could be the book you're looking for.

My Review:
Well, after looking at (very) different reviews of this book, it looks like the reading experience can go one of two ways: you either completely love it, or you just completely hate it. I loved it. Completely, except for Claire. I would have given it 5 stars but I just didn't really like her. I can't exactly put my finger on why, but I will put it this way; if Claire Randall was a real person, her and I would not exactly be friends. Personalities just would not mesh well. Heads would constantly be butting because I think we are both quite stubborn. Claire especially.
Now, to be perfectly honest, I was very worried about starting this book, because it is so damn long. And there are even more, just as thick, books in this series. I believe you have to be very dedicated to these characters and the story in general to even want to continue if you made it through the first book. Which I am, dedicated. With the exception of Claire, I fell in love with quite a few of the characters in this book, especially Jamie. I'm not even going to lie, I was wanting him for myself by just the middle of this book, he is definitely my favorite hero I've ever read. I found him perfect, but not too perfect or "pretty" feeling. I really loved his total-complete love and dedication to her.
Speaking of Claire for a moment, while I didn't really like her, that doesn't mean I wanted to see her hurt in any way or that I wouldn't care if she were or not, even if she was about to harm herself with her own stubbornness. While browsing through others' reviews, I noticed a few talking about adultery. Now, while reading the book that didn't even occur to me that it was indeed going on. But I know exactly why: I didn't like Frank either. I never got the sense that they belonged together, especially after learning of their little separation which I know they couldn't have helped happening. I know that doesn't make it okay, but honestly, I just don't care about that. I really don't. Not just because I preferred Jamie, but I hardly even got to know Frank enough to care about his feelings. But I do know he must have been frantic and heartbroken once he'd realized Claire was most likely not coming back. I realize how awful that could be. But this story is told from Claire's point-of-view, so once Claire left her present day and her husband, so did I as the reader.
Though I do think Claire deserves some credit; she did try to get back to Frank as many times as she possibly could. But, when she was back at the stones and could have gone to Frank, she didn't. I believe I know exactly why; she had already fallen in love with Jamie. While that truly is horrifying for Frank (like I cared, honestly), I understood Claire's decision to stay there with Jamie. I was so relieved she chose him, because I think they really belonged together. I think Claire passed through the stones (even though by accident) for a reason: to find Jamie.
Now enough of sounding like a crazy-book girl; I wasn't quite sure what to expect in this book, therefore I found myself pleasantly surprised at all the history and action and adventure in it. I really enjoyed all of that. I've always been interested in Scotland and Ireland (though there is no Ireland in this book..), and it was really interesting for me to read it from the author's historical and well researched point-of-view. This was more than just a cheesy romance novel, it was (in my opinion) a magical and thrilling story of two people who managed to find each other (in an amazing way) in war-torn Scotland, and start a new journey in their lives together.

My Review:I don't have very much to say about this book, hence my short review note in the title...I didn't like Caro, I didn't even really like Lord Ashdon, but, I loved Sophia. Even though she did seem a little too perfectly clever at times, I couldn't help but like her. Sometimes you just need to get to know/read someone like her. She knew what was best, and she knew how to get it done. I'm not too excited about book 2 in this series, but I am looking forward to finding out what Sophia will do next and how she will help the next young woman seeking her at the end of this book.
The writing was just okay, and comical in the right places, which I think really helped with my being able to finish this book. The story did move right along, which I truly appreciated. Not really a bad story here actually, I just couldn't connect with the two most important characters. I do hope I will be able to at least like the next hero and heroine in the next book. (Which does look a little more promising.)

My Review:
I have to admit by the synopsis alone, this book really seemed like a load of cheese. And sometimes nothing but cheese can be a great and relaxing read. But this was not all cheese. It was a very pleasant, easily enjoyable story. Filled with heartwarming faithful characters that really made me care about what happened to them, and what was going to happen to them - while I was reading it.

However, this book only got a three star rating because of the cover - Lucie is described as having dark hair, not as a blonde. And two: the type of book this was. Even though I enjoyed this story while I was reading it, it was average. In the sense that I didn't think about it. I didn't spend my time while I was doing something else I had to do, thinking about this book. I wasn't excited by it. But then again, I wasn't truly expecting an exciting read with this one. The last "Love Inspired Historical" I read, was horrifyingly bad. I was a little reluctant to start this one. But it was on my TBR list for a reason and it passed the 25-page test. So I went on with it, and I'm glad I did.
But enough of all that rambling, the most lovable characters, were of course the hero and heroine: Gabe and Lucie. I really loved them. I loved how Lucie kept her faith, and even though Gabe seemed very guarded at times; he found a way to let Lucie into his heart. But, best of all, he admitted his mistakes in the past and did everything he could to make things as right as they possibly could go. Once I realized what he was trying to do, for Lucie and most importantly; himself, I found it to be truly redeeming and well...just plain heartwarming. I think it really showed how much he cared to make things right, not only for Lucie, but for others he had unwittingly harmed as well.
But, there were several points in the story where I became worried over what might happen between the two of them. I couldn't understand it at first, but Lucie's resistance to him became a little tiresome. I began wishing she would just give in to her feelings for him and him to do the same as well. They actually seemed a little stand-offish, and not just in the beginning where it made sense, but throughout the entire story, even when it seemed they were warming to one another, someone would put a little wall up. I found this just plain annoying/exasperating at times; because I wanted them to get together so bad! They were so perfectly suited for each other in my opinion.
Overall, this was a great story while reading it, wonderful characters, touching story, but in a way, on the average side.

I really like this one because I think it has a sort of a vintage looking feel to it. Almost like an old diary of sorts which the title suggests. I love the old looking flower pattern in the background, the worn looking little book tied with a piece of string up in the corner, and the brightly colored ribbon holding it all together. Definitely not a typical looking romance story.

I really, really love the background color on this. I think it compliments the woman perfectly. She looks so lovely. The pearls make sense if you've read the first book, but if you haven't I think they could be a hint to the story.

I really love this one. I find it very romantic with the castle in the background and the couple down in the corner. I really love the warm colors as well. I read this a couple of years ago and I must admit the story is one of my favorites. It looks as though they are meeting in secret, but I didn't make that connection when I first saw this cover. Now that I look at it again, it seems a little obvious, because of the surroundings, they seem hidden away.

If you take a closer look past the tattooed eye-candy, this cover has a lot going on. What looks like crows, and eclipse, a woman, possibly an old house/manor, is all there. Hey everyone, while on my Tumblr today I found this link on how to make your own Page Corner Bookmarks. I thought it was a cool little idea so I decided to share it here. I'm going to take a shot at it this weekend. I'm not really very crafty, but this looks simple enough even for craft-challenged me. lol. But instead of pretty paper I'm going to try it with some old calendars I didn't want to get rid of because I loved the pictures so much, reincarnating them into bookmarks seems like a good idea. I really like this one because the fun cover matches the fun story of the book. Not only does it have a romantic Scottish castle in the background bathed in moonlight, the couple on the cover does not look quite right. A modern woman with a man in a traditional tartan and sword? This one really caught my eye because of that.

Favorite Couples Week: #7

Couple #7: Evelyn and Nathan Grey.

The entire story of these two characters is one of the reasons why I love Julia London's books so much. Even if everything in the beginning seems broken and hopeless in many ways, by the end of the story, everything will be righted and happy as it should be.
I remember not being able to see a way for these two to be happy at all at first. Not even really nearer to the end of the story it looked like it might not go so well, but it did of course. Nathan and Evelyn's story just seemed so sad and dreadful with everything that had happened in their past, and how badly the present seemed to be going, I could not imagine how they could move forward as they did.
They quickly became two of my favorite characters from Julia London. I loved their personalities, and I was so glad that even though Evelyn was afraid to return home to face the past, she did. And I found how Nathan did his best to protect her, even if it was originally more for his own sake at first, was so touching and showed that he still cared for her enough to at least begin to try to rebuild their tattered relationship. I just love how in her books love always comes out on top. Nathan and Evelyn are the perfect example of that.

Couple #6: Lady Chatterley and Oliver Mellors.

These two make up my classically doomed couple. I love them because, of all they went through in the entire book, in the end, they are not quite together. I loved and hated both of them. Her, for being what seemed overly sensitive at times. Him, for not being quite sensitive enough. I fear I may not completely understand them though, in the sense of the time they were set in, and what exactly the author was trying to say. I just really don't understand why he wrote them through so much, only for it to be horrifyingly bitter-sweet at the end. I felt there was only a slight possibility that they ever saw each other again. I didn't like that.

And so once again, why are they on this list? Because I found their love and situation so dramatic. Even though their story confused me a little, I still somehow liked their journey. The writing was beautiful, and even with their flaws as any normal person would have, so were they. Despite some major obstacles in their path, they still found little ways to be together, even though I didn't find it quite comforting or certain in the end.

Couple #5: Sookie Stackhouse and Eric Northman.

Okay, so Sookie and Eric have never officially been a couple, but come on, we all know they should be. Right? :) Right.
I will never forget the first time I read Eric Northman. I instantly adored his snarky dead-vampire behind. (Strike 1 against Bill.) I never understood Bill in that first book. Not even really after finally giving in and watching the TV show - which only heightened my beliefs that Sookie should be with Eric, not Bill.
Here's why I think this: in the books (#4 to be exact), Sookie and Eric do get together. But, only because Eric is not himself and Sookie is more attracted to him that way. Now, I don't know what kind of image anyone else has of Eric in their minds, but I have a very decided one on book Eric. And it definitely came completely to definition when I read the fourth book. I found him to seem to be less guarded, less of a smart ass, and even more lovable, more of what could have been his true self. The only thing there that bothered me was that he seemed to think Sookie needed taken care of. I came to this conclusion when he asked why Jason didn't look after her; him being the male. That's the only thing I didn't like, because I am positive that Sookie can take care of herself, despite the supernatural help she has had in the past. But still, one must keep in mind how old Eric is, literally.
Now, here is the thing, I truly think Eric would take care of Sookie. Why would he spend so much time....chasing her and not take care of her? I would like to think that he would open up and show his true self, but I can't even imagine Eric doing that. Perhaps, in his own little Eric way, he would somehow let her in, but I don't think he would do this completely. I can't really explain why I think that, either. Probably because my image of Eric does begin to mingle with the TV show version of him at some point in my "this is how I see Eric Northman..." But, anyway, in the book, it has happened. Therefore, somehow, I think it is possible for Sookie and Eric to be together. And it doesn't have to be awkward or forced, but I do think that someone has to let their guard(s) down for it to be able to work even just a little.
It has occurred to me that I have gone off course a little bit here, but they land in the fifth spot because in the fourth book, they are as together as it seems they ever will be. It was something I had been rooting for as and Eric fan, and I loved it.

Couple #4: Mared Lockhart and Payton Douglas.

I'll never forget how much I actually disliked these two when I first started reading their book. The last book in the trilogy that really started my love of romance novels.

It was because of Mared's resistance to him, I guess I could understand why she didn't want him, at first. But as I got to know Payton better, I began to wonder if Mared was just plain addle-brained. I'll never forget the very scene in which I found Payton to be a rather...lonely seeming character. It was when Mared walked past and noticed him in his dining room, eating completely alone. While she was on her way to dine with the other household servants, all together. That was just so sad to me. I can't even remember why I didn't like Payton at first, but I do remember thinking how stubborn a woman Mared was turning out to be. (And as I'm sitting here typing that last sentence, I put my finger on why I didn't like Payton so much.) He wasn't aggressive enough. In the previous books in the trilogy, the other two heroes (Mared's brothers) went for what they wanted. Payton just...didn't really. Not enough.

(Then why are they on my favorite couple's list?) Here's why: They finally saw the light. Well, Mared finally did, anyway. Payton never quite gave up wanting her, and he didn't go off and act like a jerk when she kept up her resistance, he pretty much just waited for her. And I loved that.

Couple #3: Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser.

I cannot even really begin to explain how much I love them. Jamie really. He just seems so perfect and dedicated to Claire, or should I say, his Sassenach. I have to admit though, I'm not really a fan of Claire, and not just because she travelled back in time and fell in love with a handsome highlander that I daresay any woman in her right mind would leave her husband for, a highlander I would give my right arm for, it was just something about her I can't exactly put my finger on. Her personality I guess. She just wasn't all that an appealing heroine to me. I didn't hate her though, I can't imagine anyone else but her with Jamie, because she definitely had what it took to suit him, maybe it was just the author's writing..I don't know.

Anyway, they had so many...obstacles to overcome, especially who she was and where she really came from. I felt so afraid for Jamie when he pulled her back and he knew then that what she had told him was real. It would have been so heartbreaking for him to lose her at that moment. They definitely get my vote for one of the strongest and bravest couples I've ever read. Not to mention one of the most touching heroes I've ever come across.

Couple #2: Lady Charlotte Wilmont and Viscount (Sebastian) Trent.

They are another pair that I loved via the "she swoons for him but he has no idea she exists" path. Quite literally. I remember the first time I really felt bad for Charlotte. She watched Sebastian sorting through the post he'd received for a good ten minutes or so, and his sister (her best friend) returns downstairs wildly talking about something and he asks who his sister is speaking to. She of course, answers Charlotte. He looks around baffled and finally spots her near the drapes. I was so mortified for poor Charlotte.
But once everything started happening much to Charlotte's shocked surprise, I was ecstatic for her. Very much wanting her to embrace the situation right away, because after all it was what she had been wanting, and Sebastian was finally looking at her the way she wanted him to. But when things changed after Charlotte could no longer stand it, I became very worried. (This is why Elizabeth Boyle has become one of my favorite authors.) Somehow she makes everything turn out alright. There is no more heartbreak, only love coming through at the end of the day, the kind one (me) dreams about. And for me that is the best thing about romance novels, when everything rightly comes together after everything the hero and heroine have been through to be together.

Welcome to Favorite Couples week; in trying to keep with my Romance theme: I share one of my favorite literary couples every day this week. Hope you enjoy, and share one of yours with me! :)

Couple #1: Lady Hermione Marlowe and Lord Rockhurst.

I love them because of the way they were with one another as a couple. Definitely not the traditional romance couple. That is why I chose them as my first to share. In one way Lady Hermione noticed Lord Rockhurst and longed for him along with the rest of the other young ladies of the ton, while he basically ignored her. But once it was nightfall, every single thing changed and all (well, almost all) of her dreams came true. Not only did she find out Lord Rockhurst's stunning secrets, her whole life changed, for the better. Even so at one point where it seemed that everything was ruined and she would never see Lord Rockhurst in that way again, everything just worked out for them. That's what I love about romances so much, everything is (usually) always okay in the end.

Book one in The Marlowe Series.

When shy Charlotte Wilmont makes a wish after one particularly devastating afternoon with her best friend Hermione Marlowe and her handsome older brother; Sebastian - Viscount Trent, she has no idea that the inherited ring she is wearing has the power to grant it, and change her life forever. When she awakes the next morning, she finds herself in quite a shocking situation, not to mention that her wish has come true.

I don't really remember the synopsis that I first read for this book that made me want to read it, but once I began this book, and realized what kind of story was hidden inside of it's pages, I was very surprised. In the sense that I was not expecting what it offered. I daresay I was even as surprised as poor Charlotte was at first. But once the story really began to pick up and move forward (which was quickly) this became a very enjoyable and fun read.
I really loved all of the characters, especially Quince. Sebastian and his family were very lovable as well, if not a little on the odd side of the fence. But I think the character that had the biggest transformation, was our heroine Charlotte. Not just because of her magical ring, but because of the things she discovered in her new life that were hidden in her old one. Not only did she come out of her shell, she used her new knowledge to obtain the things she wanted, including Sebastian.
If you're looking for a light-hearted read, filled with interesting characters - some that come back in the second book with shocking secrets of their own, one you could read in one to two sittings as I did, this could just hit the spot.

Is it totally crazy to want Jamie Fraser's clan motto (in french), (Je suis pret: I am ready.) for my next tattoo? Seriously, is it? I need opinions... I also looked up some other, Gaelic sayings, words, etc. But can't stop thinking about that motto, at all. I don't know. I'm giving myself until December to decide. It's not like I don't already have a bookish word on myself, so it wouldn't be too odd for me. But if I find it still floating in my head by then, I guess it could be considered done.
Anyway, sorry for the silent hiatus. I've been stinking at reading, thus stinking at blogging. But the Romance theme really is coming next month, my reading habits have improved. :) (I love you reading gods, for shining down on me with "Outlander.") See you next month everyone! :) (Really.)

Hey everyone! I hope you all liked my reading theme for last month. This month I am reading some of my absolute favorite type of books: romance novels! Next month I will be posting reviews for what I read this month. So that means, it will be quiet at my blog this month.

But, speaking of next month, I was wondering if anyone wanted to do a guest post review that will appear here next month. Perhaps with a review they've already featured and want to shed light on again, or a new review they just haven't had the chance to post on their own blog yet...? As long as it's on a romance novel! Vampire Mountain.

Book 4 of 12 in Cirque Du Freak: The Saga of Darren Shan.

When Larten Crepsley comes to Darren one night and tells him to pack his bags, Darren is automatically filled with curiosity. They are about to make the long, hard trek to Vampire Mountain to attend council with the Vampire Princes. But before they can leave, Mr. Tiny has a message for them to deliver to the Princes, which he sends through two of his little people - which Larten is less than thrilled about. On that road they encounter many obstacles and surprises, and once they reach their destination, Darren finds he must face challenges he never even dreamed he'd be up against.
Pulling away from my "old friend" way of reviewing these books, this book didn't really give that feeling at all. It felt more like one of those "leading up to..." reads, a set up, if you will, for the next book which looks even more promising. I still enjoyed this book though, very much. It was familiar, and I think Darren really faced things head-on, not backing down, and did what he had to do to prove himself.
Larten on the other hand, stayed almost the same as he has always been in previous reads. But there was something different about him, and the reader notices it right along with Darren - he showed some excitement, and just a peek inside of himself, which was refreshing. I hope in the next books he continues to grow a bit more and becomes more of an understandable character.
So, even though this book fell a smidge on the flat side in the way that it wasn't as exciting as the others, I just enjoyed reading more about Darren and seeing the way he takes things as a young half-vampire. Doing his best, no matter what the challenge and how hard it may be.

The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and The Struggle.

My Review:
I loved these books so much I don't even know where to begin.
I guess I could start with how different the TV show is from them. While I am a big fan of the show, it cannot compare to the books. (As is usually the case between books/movies/tv in my opinion.) There are just so many differences, after reading this I don't even know why they made so many changes. I mean, I guess I could see why, to make their show work of course. But, just why did they have to change it so much? I want to see the original book come to life, not someone else's fantasy about how they possibly think it should have been... I do still love the show though, Ian Somerhalder has made Damon one of my favorite vampires, and, individually, imagining no books, I think the show is pretty good. But comparing it with the books, it could actually be a little disappointing - depending on how big a fan you are I suppose. But I digress.
I just couldn't get over the ending of The Struggle. It was just so shocking even though I kind of new what would happen, but I didn't know it would happen like that. That it would be so potentially devastating.
I didn't really understand Damon at first, he just seemed like pure evil and I actually hated that. But as I got deeper into the story I really started liking him and I can't exactly explain why. I guess it was easier because I didn't really like Stefan. I don't know what it was. He even seemed a little scarce, cut-off. I just remember Damon having a stronger presence in the book. I think, for me, Damon is what I like to see in a vampire. On the cruel side, but still somehow...understanding to the one he is trying to control. Sort of a monster, and sneaky about it. A nicer word would be cunning, but I don't think Damon would truly appreciate that nice word. Stefan is not so bad though. The safer type of vampire. Just wants everything to be okay and protect those he loves. I find nothing wrong with that. It's just that Damon is more of an exciting character for me.
Moving on from Damon-raving, I found the story to be perfect. Good pace, good writing, and great characters in their own right. Since I have been watching the show since the beginning, the book was more refreshing because it's the original work. I feel like I found out some secrets, and I definitely met some characters that deserved to be known. I am so glad I finally read these. I am dying to move on to the next books to find out what happens next.

Now, along with my supernatural friends Tori, Derek, and Simon, I’m on the run from the Edison Group, which genetically altered us as part of their sinister experiment. We’re hiding in a safe house that might not be as safe as it seems. We’ll be gone soon anyway, back to rescue those we’d left behind and to take out the Edison Group . . . or so we hope.

My Review:
After reading the last book, I wasn't too keen on continuing with this trilogy right away, but I did anyway. I didn't want to wait to finish it when this was the last book before the next part comes out in April, (more on that later, though.) and leave it behind for awhile, so to speak. I was so glad I didn't wait. I didn't really like the second book too much, but this one really made up for that.
Mainly for one thing, Derek finally changes into a full werewolf. That alone made this read worth it; because I am definitely a were kind of girl. I was so relieved when the author didn't turn him into a snarling-crazy one either. Not that I really had much in that direction to think that would be the case, but sometimes nasty surprises like that happen in books. I was happy about that because it would have been so...ugly if there were a truly vicious side to Derek, as I came to find in other characters in this book.

While I really liked this one, I wished it would have moved a little faster while I was reading it. Not just to see what happens in the end, but because it seemed there was a little filler in it in some places. Not like whole parts of chapters and such, but put throughout the book. Extra little details where they didn't really matter, like what kind of ice cream and what someone brought them for breakfast that I just didn't care about.
But I digress, with another thing I was thankful for; for finally happening, they finally did what they set out for. They stood up to the people that were, in a way, controlling their lives and took that control back. Even if only for the time being. And Chloe seemed to finally at least try to get comfortable with her powers, but at pretty much what was the end of the book.
There were some loose ends in this book and I know why. I read up on this trilogy, which is actually a first part of what seems a sort of series. The next book is called "The Gathering" and comes out in April, you can read a little more about it here. In a short interview I found with the author, she eventually plans to connect all of them - which I cannot wait to see unfold. The Awakening.

Book 2 of 3 in The Darkest Powers Trilogy.

While I was happy to be reading my very first e-book, I was not happy about the book itself. It seemed slow and a little, well, dragged. To be perfectly honest I don't even really feel like reviewing it, but I will do my best.
Book two picks up where book one left off: Chloe and Rae are back at the Lab with the Edison Group, contemplating escape. Well, Chloe is contemplating escape, and also dealing with, and learning a little, from a demon that has contacted her there. To make a long story short, Rae has to stay at the lab, while Chloe and Tori and a few of the Edison Group people take the girls out to try to make contact with Simon and Derek - who have managed to stay out of reach of the Edison Group. Chloe and Tori manage to get away and find the boys, while trying to find a way to save their friends back at the lab, and themselves - with the hopes of finding the one person they think can help them: Andrew, a friend of Simon and Derek's father.
I liked the fact that Derek and Chloe's relationship began to soften a little when they got separated from Simon and Tori. It was kind of interesting seeing both their reactions to Derek's (almost) changing. But it was a little confusing. It almost seemed like they had a love-hate thing going between them. They had to stick together, but it seemed so hard for them at times. I guess I just didn't really understand where Derek was coming from. I think the author may have been trying to make him the take-charge guy of the group, but I think he was a little too "take-charge" at times. I couldn't really tell if that was his personality, or what he felt was simply his responsibility.
I know Chloe was afraid of her powers, but I wished she would have tried harder to...embrace them. I realize she is just a teenager, but definitely not a normal teenager. Not just because she is a genetically altered necromancer, but in the way that she wouldn't even seem normal if she weren't a necromancer. If she truly was just ordinary and normal, I don't think I would care for her character at all. It's just really weird for me, because in the first book I really liked her, now I'm not so sure. Of course I'm considering all of the obstacles she is going through, but the other characters are going through them right along with her, she just doesn't cope very well to me in this book.
I've actually already read the last book, so it's a little hard for me to go further and explain more about how I feel about the characters and the journey they are taking, so I think I will end this review here, and just say that while I wasn't exactly wild about this book, I wouldn't say it was totally a let down.

Review:
While I was thrilled to get this book from the library, I was a little less thrilled while reading it. I didn't hate it, I liked it, but for some reason I just couldn't push the Inkworld out of my mind. Not to say that the stories were too much alike, they were very different, and each had their own amazing and horrifying characters, but I felt that the worlds were too similar. When reading details about the other world I got the same feel as I did when reading about the Inkworld. Perhaps I should have read Dragon Rider or The Thief Lord in between, it might have been a better idea to read something else of hers in between series'.
I'm glad to say that there was something I did really enjoy about this book though: the illustrations; drawn by the author herself. They were so lovely and sometimes foreboding.
As for the characters, I don't know if I really have a favorite in this book, but if I really had to choose one, I think I would choose Fox. She was very surprising and a perfect companion for Jacob, who really was so reckless at times I just couldn't understand it. I hope all of the characters will be...explained better in the next book. I hardly felt connected to any of them in this one. But by the end of this book, somehow I couldn't help but feel involved with the plot.
I haven't really much else to say, except for the fact that I am planning to read the next book, because I am curious enough about everyone's next moves to continue with this series.

Book 3 of 12 in Cirque Du Freak: The Saga of Darren Shan.

When mysterious Vampire General Gavner Purl turns up at the Cirque looking for Mr. Crepsley, he has some unpleasant news that will take him away from the Cirque, and though he doesn't want to - Larten decides he must take Darren with him in case he may be in need of help. After Darren squabbles about it, as any lonely young person may, Mr. Crepsley asks him if he might like Evra Von; the snake-boy to come with them. Evra agrees, and once they spend some time in the city, Darren makes a (sort of) girlfriend in Debbie Hemlock. Things go great for Darren and Evra in the city until they see a news report on television, about a group of bodies found in an abandoned building, all drained of their blood. Darren and Evra are shocked, and don't know what to do - especially since Mr. Crepsley had been acting strange and secretive since they had arrived, going out alone every night not telling the boys a thing about what he'd been up to.

This book had quite a different feeling for me while reading; I'm pretty sure it was the prologue that set the tone for me. While I still felt like I was with an old friend, it was not like we were catching up, it was like I was there with him for every event, experiencing every single little detail for myself right along with Darren. Feeling his unhappiness, his fear, his pain, and his relief.
Speaking of relief, I especially felt it during a big scene in the book, which I will try my best not to spoil, but I was so glad that Darren did not...hit his mark. Somehow I just knew that Mr. Crepsley was not at fault for what Darren believed him to be, and I am happy that he and Darren were finally about to work on trusting one another. I think they needed something big like that for that door to be opened. Something unavoidable and with an underlying urgency to get them through it and onto the next steps in doing so, quickly.
In this story the reader is also introduced to a Vampaneze. All I will say about him is that I found him to be a truly ugly creature, and I think that calling him crazy would be a bit of an understatement. If I lived in Darren's world I would never want to run into one, not even if I felt the way Mr. Crepsley did about them. I guess I could kind of understand what he was trying to relate to Darren, but I think that level of understanding has to grow with time.
And, naturally, speaking of growing, I know Darren changed more in this book, too. I know he's faced some ugliness in the past, but I think this was a true test for him. But not only for Darren, for Larten as well - not only did he have to make a decision about the Vampaneze, he had to get Darren's trust in some way and be able to return it.

Book 2 of 12 in Cirque Du Freak: The Saga of Darren Shan.

Half-vampire Darren Shan is struggling with many things in his new erhm...undead life - like dealing with Mr. Larten Crepsley for one thing, the vampire who made him his assistant in exchange for saving his best friend Steve's life after Darren stole his amazing performing spider, not having any friends, and one more very important thing. Drinking human blood, which he needs to live - because animal blood just won't keep him alive for much longer.
After explaining his unhappiness to Mr. Crepsley, Larten decides to return to the Cirque with Darren, where he meets more of the freaks and gets to know them better. And, more importantly, he makes a friend in the Cirque: the snake-boy Evra Von. He also makes a curious new friend in Sam Grest; a boy who comes upon the freak show one night - none of them knowing it would have been best for him to stay away all together.

As with the first book, this was a very enjoyable read, sort of like visiting an old friend. Comfortably hearing what's been going on in their life, and sometimes feeling like you'd never left them before you decided to return. While reading this, I had a bit of a gross-foreboding feeling. I knew somewhere the story would get ugly and I would inevitably be grossed out by some thing or another. But I never thought I would feel that bittersweet sadness. I hoped, and thought, that somehow the events that were pointing to a tragedy would twist at the last possible moment in the book, but they did not. Leaving me heartbroken for Darren and Sam, but somehow relieved that Darren finally listened to Mr. Crepsley. Not only so he would live, but to preserve his friend's spirit.

I remember realizing by the end of the first book, there was a change in Darren; he had mostly accepted that his life was forever changed and his new path was now to be with Larten, learning what he would need to know to survive as a half-vampire. By the end of this book that feeling was back, and I hope I will continue to see Darren with that same acceptance of change in his life in the next books in the series as I read them. I also love the fact, that the change in him came with him doing what it took to save a friend. I find that to be such an admirable thing for a young person, slowly growing up.

Mr. Crepsley surprised me in this book. He felt he'd made a mistake by making Darren his assistant. I guess I felt that way because I never questioned it in the first book. I don't really like to question the author's hard work with the plot - especially in a series, but I did a little after this book. Why did Mr. Crepsley make a young person like Darren (I'm not sure how old Darren is actually, but I'm thinking around twelve or so..) his assistant? Why didn't he take another route and possibly wait until Darren was older...? I don't think I'll ever know, because I don't even think Mr. Crepsley knows. I'm not even sure I want to know, because I am really loving these books just the way they are. I think Darren's age is adding to the satisfaction. I don't remember ever coming across such a young, new (half) vampire. But I like that, because it's a new experience for both Darren and I. Seeing the world of freaks and vampires from a refreshing new and innocent perspective.

The Plot Thickens in March.

Hey Everyone! I just wanted to talk a little about my reviewing theme for this month: The Plot Thickens (pt. 1). I chose that theme because I am continuing on with some series' that I have been enjoying and I didn't want to put them on the side for later. It's a part one because they have some mystery to them (I think so, anyway), part two will be mysteries, not necessarily in a series. I decided on "The Plot Thickens" because I think that is what happens in a series, you get deeper in with the characters and sometimes a plot (or subplot) that carried into the next book continues and thickens, in a way.

My Review:
I don't know what it is about Kate Furnivall's novels that makes me keep picking them up, I'm usually a bit disappointed with them, and this one was no exception - but I digress. I thought this sounded like a great read, and I guess it could be for the right person, but not for me. It was just okay for me. Once again I liked the cover and design of the chapter pages, but...there was just too much...story. I do love a long engrossing read, but there's always something, something in her books that makes me say to myself, now that is just unbelievable. Even more (possibly) unbelievable, is that I actually intend to read more of her books. For one (important) reason, she is able to make me care about the characters, no matter how unsatisfying their journey is or how questionable their actions may be at one (or more) point in the story. I can't help but feel relieved or scared or happy for them at the appropriate moments.
I don't know if it was the pace of my reading or the pace of the storytelling, but I found it to be a little slow for my tastes. Too many little things that were happening and not enough of what I found to be more important for the story to move along at a better pace. But, I will admit that all of that writing was lovely. Transportable. Even though I wouldn't ever want to visit Stalin's Russia.
I don't even know how anyone could or did really. Not even these fictional characters. Working and working and having to watch their backs and their neighbors and finding the strength to do it day after day. I loved the strength that Sofia had, without it I don't think she could have done what she did, or even thought of doing it. Determination and hope were things that I think she had through the entire book. And sometimes, on her journey, they seemed like they were all she had with her. Just to keep herself going, and to suceed at what she thought was right, for the one person she held dear in the hard world they both lived in.

Short Monday: The Three Spinsters.

Short Monday #7: The Three Spinsters, part of Grimm's Fairy Tales.

A lazy young girl has angered her mother by not working spinning flax into thread, her mother tires and goes to her daughter to hit her, just as the Queen is passing in the street. She hears the young girl's cries and thinks she has a solution for the mother and the daughter. She takes the daughter to live with her, and promises her eldest son to wed the daughter once she has spun the Queen's flax. But the daughter is vexed and cannot help herself and does not know what to do. When she is looking out the window in her angry (lazy) helplessness, she see's three women walking by. They each have one ugly feature about them: a broad flat foot, an usually large lower lip, and the last a very big thumb. The girl relays her trouble, and the women agree to help her. They spin the flax for her, and the Queen is so pleased, thinking the girl had finally done the work - the wedding took place right away. But the three would only help the girl on one condition, she welcomed them to her wedding. The girl of course agreed and went through with her promise. The Queen's son saw her three ugly "aunts" and asked them how they came to look that way, they replied, by treading, licking, and pressing the thread. The Prince was so appalled, he declared that his wife will never spin again.

Wow, who ever thought that a lazy girl could be so clever and fortunate...

Short Monday: The Twelve Brothers.

Short Monday #6: The Twelve Brothers, part of Grimm's Fairy Tales.

This has to be one of the battiest stories yet. But the strange thing is, I think it would have been better with more length. In fact, I wonder if parts of it could be missing..

Anyway. The king turns to his queen one day and decides that if she bears him a daughter, he will have his twelve sons killed. (Out of the blue, much?) He has twelve coffins made and stored in a room in the castle, and their mother, not being able to bear the strange-somewhat-dim-witted king's horrifying decision, cries so much that the youngest son pesters her until she tells him of his fathers plans for the twelve brothers. They wisely decide to leave the castle, each keeping watch for a safe white flag, or a deadly stay-away red flag to be flown from the castle. On the twelfth day, they see the red flag is flown, letting them know their mother gave birth to a girl. This angers them, being put-out by a maiden, they decide that the first maiden they come upon, she must be killed. (Perhaps they are angry at the wrong people here...) They venture off further into the woods and come upon a charmed house, where they decide to live.

The years pass, and a great wash takes place (from what I gather from the story, this is a massive laundry day.) and the brother's twelve shirts are hung to dry. The daughter asks who they belong to, and the mother tells her of her brothers. The daughter then decides to find them, which she does, and she meets the youngest brother first and tells him who she is. He hides her when his older brothers return home, and he makes them promise not to kill the first maiden they meet, and they agree, thus sparing their little sister, whom they immediately love greatly.

But one day, their sister sees twelve lovely flowers outside of their charmed house, and as she breaks the flowers off to take inside for her brothers, they one by one turn into crows and the house and garden disappear, leaving the girl alone in the woods. She notices an old woman standing near her, who tells her she should have left the flowers alone, and shares with her a way to bring her brothers back to normal.

She must be "dumb" for seven years - not speaking or laughing at all, if she speaks or laughs just once, her brothers will die. She does as the old woman says. One day a king comes upon her and seeing how beautiful the girl is, he asks her to marry him, she slightly nods her head yes and he takes her away to his castle. But his wickedly mother sees and thinks that the girl is not right in her silence, and so she eventually convinces her son to have her killed. And on that day, the very moments she is being burned at the stake, the seven years are ended, and her brothers swoop from the sky and turn back into men, and save their sister from death, finally allowing her to speak; and tell the king her story. All of them finally living together happily ever after.

Once again, I have no idea what the moral of this story is, but if I had to find one I suppose it would be to have perseverance...

The Barnes & Noble Nook Color.

I got a Nook Color for Christmas, and of course, I was very excited about it. In the short time I have had it, it has become so addicting. I LOVE it.

Although at first, I wasn't so sure I was going to keep it. While the Nook Color is all kinds of awesome, it was a pain in the butt to set up. The first few steps were easy enough, but when it came to the wireless connection it didn't want to...unlock. I was so bummed, because it wouldn't let me go to the next step until it connected. It detected our wireless connection here, but it was locked for some reason, and it wasn't because we typed in the wrong password or anything like that, it was just like it was stuck there, telling me it wasn't going to do anything. Frustrating. Until I checked the message boards for the Nook. To shorten this story, my brother ended up driving me to Barnes & Noble praying we could pick up their wireless signal so it would let me move on to the next step of registration. It worked, and I was so happy - I decided not to run it over. :)

I must have spent at least an hour browsing their free books (which is an okay selection), and trying to decide what would be my first Nook purchase, which is so easy to do. While I have loaded it with some books, I think I actually spend more time browsing the web on this than anything else so far. It's actually pretty fun for me to be able to do that because it's fast and convenient - especially in the middle of the night. :p I have noticed that some things don't run on this, like some flash software and I can't blog on it. But I still love it.

Now as for reading e-books, I've read one so far, mostly in bed, and I love it. It's so much easier to get comfortable with my Nook and my hands don't get tired from holding the pages back from some that are annoyingly bound (like mass-market paperbacks). All I have to do to turn the page is tap the screen, and I can turn my light off and not have to fidget with my little reading light because the screen is lit with an adjustable brightness. Another thing I really love about this is being able to get sample chapters of pretty much any book available. I've already eliminated a few books from my reading list thanks to that, and it also helped me choose which books to read for my themes.

Another basic, but cool thing I love is that I can set the wallpaper to anything I'd like, like my current choice here. I also didn't have much trouble picking a cover for it either. I love mine.

So, even though it was annoying to set up, the Nook color has been impressive for me. It's my first e-reader and I absolutely love it!

Haunting January- &February Plans.

Hello everyone! I hope you all liked my Haunting January theme even though I forgot to explain it in the beginning of the month. :) (Oops.)

This month, I won't be doing much of anything so that means it's going to be quiet at my blog again. I do have have a couple of reviews left to post though. And of course, Short Monday will still go on.

In March things will pick up with my next reviewing theme - "The Plot Thickens." I'll be continuing with (mostly mystery type) series' that I've been dying to move on with. Which include Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers Trilogy, Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak, and Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire/Sookie Stackhouse series. Plus a few others. I thought I might include stand alone mysteries in this as well, but I think it'll be mostly series continuation. Maybe I can make this theme into a two-parter. I know some of these series reads can be categorized as mystery as well, but they're not stand alone. So the second part could be only stand alone mysteries...

Short Monday: The Musicians of Bremen.

In The Musicians of Bremen, an Ass (donkey, not some jerk, :p) is escaping his demise once he realizes his master is going to get rid of him as his strength has begun to weaken considerably. He decides to go to Bremen to become a musician, on his way there he comes upon a hound in the same position, and persuades him to join him. It goes so on with a cat and a rooster who are also destined to be killed.

When night falls they stop to sleep beneath a large tree. The rooster makes his way to the top branches and spies a light in the distance. He tells his fellow musicians and they move on to investigate. They see that it is a house of four thieves with a huge feast upon their table. the animals, seeing this decide to...play a song. it ends up scaring the thieves so much that they flee the house, allowing the old animals a chance to feast and rest indoors for the night. But the thieves come back at midnight, and they make the mistake of sending only (the dumbest) one inside to see what was the matter once they see that the light has been distinguished inside.

The poor thief gets such a shock of a beating after scaring the cat and all of the animals really, that he believes a witch and her companions have taken over the house. Upon telling his captain his terrifying experience, they decide to leave at once, never to return. Of course, leaving the animals there with the house to themselves.

To be perfectly honest, I don't know what the moral of this story could be. I haven't really thought much on it, though. All I can really say, is that I'm glad the animals lived and nothing horrible happened to them after all. This being a Grimm fairy tale, I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

I usually take a huge roll of tape and try my best to put the tape over them so they last a little longer (though it can be a bit of a pain to do so). Review:

I was really looking forward to this book after finally getting to it on my reading list, and even though it fell a little flat for me, I liked it. I even plan to read more books by this author.

The reason it fell flat for me was the heroine. I could never imagine disliking a romance heroine and continuing on with the story, but I did it. Amelia was...annoying at first. She did grow on me a bit though, but overall I found her to be too squeaky. The story itself was fun and bubbly - a nice easy and comfortable read. I loved "the guys," but I also had a hard time connecting with them as well, until I found out what had happened to them - it was, well, heartbreaking. I felt so bad for Amelia, not being able to get anyone's attention as she sees what is happening and feeling completely helpless. Then when she went back, there was nothing left. I totally felt her devastation.

So even though the characters were a little disappointing, the story here was worth it - and I am so glad I stuck with it.

Welcome to short monday. Where I work my way through short story books, poetry books, and whatever else that can be qualified for a short monday. (Please excuse me while I work out the kinks and find the right path for this.)

Short Monday #4: The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats, part of Grimm's Fairy Tales.

To be perfectly honest, I was dreading this book. I'm several stories in now, and, I actually like them. I guess I thought these would be a little more...horrifying. Not to high extremes of blood and guts everywhere, but, well my problem is that I hate even suttle horror. Horror is actually too strong a word here, gross, is more like it. I prefer not to think of it at all, avoiding it whenever I can...I simply hate being grossed out. It's not fun for me in any way, or even slightly amusing. I know it can never be completely avoided, especially in some books. But I digress.
Anyhoo, in this story a mother goat goes out to find food and leaves her seven little baby goats alone, and there is a wolf stalking around the woods that has been trying to eat them. She warns them about him and tries to teach them how to recognize him if he comes to their hut trying to fool them. Being satisfied her babies will be safe, the mother goat leaves and of course, the wolf shows up at their door shortly after. His first attempts do not fool them, but after disguising himself enough to get into the hut, he finds and eats all but one. When the mother goat returns to find her children have been eaten, the youngest one comes out of it's hiding place and tells her what happened. They both run off in sadness and they come upon the very full, sleeping wolf in the meadow. After checking him out, the mother goat notices that his stomach is stirring, believing her children to still be alive inside of him, she runs home to get scissors, a needle, and thread. She returns to the still sleeping wolf, and cuts open his stomach, and amazingly, out pop her six eaten babies. (Oh, boy!) She then tells them to collect large stones to fill his stomach back up so he won't know the difference. Once he awakes, he does know the difference, but he is so thirsty he goes down to the brook to get a drink. But being so heavy with stones, he falls in and drowns, and the goat family literally sings for joy.
I guess ultimately I'm more shocked than grossed out by this book. I'd heard things about these fairy tales that were really gross, but I haven't come across it (yet?). I just have this image of fairy tales in my head...sweet and happily ever after. Basically Disney-fied. (Nothing wrong with that.) But, when you think about it, those come from something that have gross original backgrounds, don't they? Or at least, sad and depressing backgrounds.
Not much else to say, at least until I do my own little history search on fairy tales and how much of a gross factor is usually there.

I was sitting around bored, and somehow I decided to do a search on vampires to see what I would find. I came across a "monster" site and found out how to become a Werewolf. I never knew there were so many ways! It was actually kind of interesting.

Short Monday: The Music of the Night.

Short Monday #3: The Music of the Night by Amanda Ashley, part of The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance.

Okay phantom fans, are you ready for this? Cristie Matthews is obsessed with The Phantom of the Opera. She manages to take a trip to Paris to visit the opera house where his story took place, and she ends up "accidentally" staying there overnight and, guess who she meets? Yes. The Phantom of the Opera. This is set in modern times, so how could she possibly meet him? He is not a ghost, he is not entirely a normal man (but was he ever?) He is Erik...the vampire. And he actually invites her to his lair to spend time with him for about a month if I remember correctly, because he is so lonely and he would like her to be his Christine, "if only for a little while." (Don't all gag at once, now.)

You would think that with my obsession for vampires and Erik, that Erik as a vampire would thrill me. This did not. I think it was the fact that this was a short story (I think that with a little more effort from the author and a longer length, this could have been good), and I am a picky phantom fan. Also, some things just did not make sense. The ending for example, really bothers me. She lives in the states, he is in Paris and a vampire. How did he manage to get to her in the end? It just bugs me. Also, he did not seem like Erik. He seemed like the movie-musical Erik. The only thing I really liked about that Erik was the way Gerard Butler swirled his cape and made a very attractive Erik. Not necessarily a great Erik, but a more...likable one (at least for a first time phantom viewer like I was).

I am tempted to go on and on about this but I won't. I didn't like it, didn't do a thing for me. Not so sure the author really understands who the phantom is. Personally I think he could make a wicked vampire, but he seemed all...mushy and appalling. I think Erik as a vampire probably depends on which version of him it is. I think I understand him at an okay level, but I can't help but have an image of him for myself. The image I have of him as a vampire is sort of a confusing one. I just can't decide if he'd be one of the worst, or...possibly like (book) Eric Northman or (TV show) Damon Salvatore really...maybe some sort of equal cross between the two. I think he'd be a little snarky but also a little mad (crazy), and maybe, with the right girl, kind of soft in private. Okay, my rambling is over.

Definitely Dead. (Short Review.)

Book 6 of 10 (?) in the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Series.

When Sookie's cousin Hadley dies - leaving everything to Sookie, she has to go to New Orleans to sort through Hadley's things. But, not before she has a date with hot shape-shifter Quinn, getting attacked by two freshly turned weres on that date, and upon meeting the lawyer and half demon that are to take her to Hadley's apartment, they all find there has been a dead half demon (messenger) in the edge of the woods of her home. Killed by someone who did not want Sookie anywhere near New Orleans possibly digging into Hadley's past.

This was a great book, not just because there was a lot more Quinn in it, but because there is a short history of The Vampire Queen of Louisanna in it's pages. I love Sophie-Anne on the TV show, and finding out a bit more about her was great. A lot happened in this book, but unfortunately, I have waited too long to sit down and review it. All I can really say is that this book was just as much a fun, entertaining read as the others have been, and I cannot wait to get onto the next book in the series.

Book 1 of 3 in The Darkest Powers Trilogy.

Chloe Saunders finds herself in a group home for mentally unstable teens after one very bad afternoon at school, where she starts seeing, and talking, to dead people. And they can see and talk to her just as clearly. The group home is Lyle House, and as Chloe's stay lengthens, she begins to see that things there aren't what she initially thought they were. And neither are her housemates: Simon, Derek, Liz, Rae, and Tori. As terrifying secrets unfold, Chloe and her friends find themselves plotting an escape - and Chloe is ultimately betrayed by someone she always held close in her heart.

I can safely say I am now a paranormal fan, or, at least, a Kelley Armstrong fan. Personally I had a slow start with this one, but once I got into the story I could hardly put it down. I became pretty involved with the story and all of the patients at Lyle House. I just have this strong need to know what is going to happen to/with all of them. Since Chloe is our narrator, the reader knows only exactly what she does, and the author did a great job unfolding things and there is still enough uncertainty to want to continue on to the next book in the trilogy.

I just love Chloe and want so bad for her to reach her potential and find a way to get out of the mess she is in. I'm also interested in seeing how things develop between her and Derek. I don't know how exactly, but when he was first really described in the story, I just knew there was something different about him. I hate to say it but I didn't care much for Rae at all, she was just a little too strong personality-wise for me. I know that isn't exactly a bad thing for her situation, but I just didn't find her very likable. But I do hope that will change as I read the other books.

While the others are explained, I was left wondering about Tori and what she was doing there. If it was as Chloe thought or if there is something special about her as well, I hope that will be explained in the next book.

So overall this was a pretty satisfying read, with interesting, otherworldly characters.

Short Monday: The Righteous.

As I said last week, this weeks short monday has a better result. The Righteous really grabbed me and I am really looking forward to reading the series it leads to: The Cin Craven series. This story is Devlin and Justine's, set in 1675, where Justine; mistress to the king and vampire slayer, meets and falls in love with Devlin; a vampire. By the end of this story the reader learns that Justine's sister; Solange, has been kidnapped by the very vampires that she hunts and she must make a life changing decision to save her.

There is also another prequel to The Cin Craven series in The Mammoth Book of Irish Romance, which I have not read yet (but plan to). It is the story of Morrigan and The High Kings, whom are also (briefly) in The Righteous.

Liking short stories is looking up for me!

A Living Nightmare.

Book 1 of 12 in Cirque Du Freak: The Saga of Darren Shan.

In A Living Nightmare, one of Darren Shans best friends, Alan, steals a flyer from his older brother for the freak show: Cirque Du Freak. Which they think sounds like the coolest thing ever, none of them knowing it will change Darren's life forever. When they find out they can only purchase two tickets, but there are four friends, it comes down to Steve Leonard, and a ticket toss up between the other three. As if by fate, Darren gets the other ticket. The freak show is the only thing he and Steve can think about, until they actually go. Once Darren sees Larten Crepsley and his amazing spider Madam Octa, having a lifelong love of spiders, Darren has to have her.

Much like Darren and Steve and the freak show, this book was all I could think about after I picked it up from the library and began to read it. I had a slow start to it because I was a little put off by the spider-story introduction, but once I got past that silliness and got more into this story, I had a hard time putting it down. I positively loved this book, even though initially I didn't think I would. But that had nothing to do with the author's work at all. It was the movie adaptation I had previously watched; The Vampire's Assistant (which I really enjoyed, but should have known by the titles that it wouldn't be quite the same thing). I kind of thought the book would be like that, but it wasn't - and I was so glad for that. I don't know how many times I have watched a movie adaptation and then decided to go ahead with the books...but the books are never what I expected and I am always (usually) pleasantly surprised with what I find. And, this was no exception.
First, the story telling; simply put: it was comfortable. Especially for such bad things happening to the narrator. I'm trying my best not to put any spoilers here, but Darren is a very interesting, and well, nervy character to be brave enough to steal from a vampire. It felt as if he just came over to hang out and ended up telling me how he got to a certain point in his life. In the beginning, you know you're dealing with a young person, but by the end of the book, while there's still some growing up to do, you know Darren has changed in more than one obvious way.
Secondly, the story itself. I have to admit, I was a little worried about the number of books in this when I found out how many more there were. But now that I've read this, I look forward to them. I cannot wait to see what happens next, not just to Darren, but to Steve and to see where Mr. Tiny (who, in the movie reminded me of a rapper named Necro, for some strange reason..) comes in, as he was one of my favorite characters from the movie. Another thing I was worried about once I read on and realized, is that it is only about a few major events really. I thought it might actually grow boring, but it didn't. I think the author did a fantastic job with keeping the story a little minimal, and staying focused on the current events, while keeping things going on at a good pace.
A Living Nightmare may have had a somewhat simple plot, but it was thrilling and intriguing, with characters you may or may not, want to meet.

Any New Year’s reading resolutions?

Honestly, I haven't really thought about any resolutions this year. But now that I am sitting down to do some blogging, I can't think of anything better right now.

So, my reading resolutions would be: To simply read more. I'm not exactly sure when or how it happened, but my reading habits are now horrifying. I almost don't read at all. I have some remedies for myself on this though: Themes for my blog. I got a Nook Color for Christmas (which is awesome and so addicting). A new (sort of) meme to get through all those short story and poetry books I have on my reading list. I've started picking up books during TV commercials.

Hopefully, I will have a better reading year and blogging year this year.
